The Supreme Court of Kenya has ruled that the Sh500 billion contract between Kenya and China for the construction of the Standard Gauge Railways (SGR) is legal and transparent. The court overturned a previous ruling by the Court of Appeal, which had found flaws in the procurement process. Allegations of inflated costs benefiting a select few individuals have plagued the project, but the judges declared that no illegality was committed. The SGR procurement was considered a government-to-government contract and therefore exempt from public procurement laws. The project was signed and supervised by former President Uhuru Kenyatta and his then-deputy William Ruto in 2013.
