The death of Dr Caleb Tanui, a gynaecologist based in Nandi County, has taken a new turn after the arrest of three suspects, including his wife.

The doctor went missing from his workplace on 31 March 2023 and was found dead days later in a thicket in his village.

Samples from his body were taken to the government chemists for further examination, but the results are yet to be released.

One of the suspects surfaced last Friday and confessed that he was paid Sh3,000 to dump the late doctor’s body in the bush.

His confession led to the arrest of him, the deceased’s wife and a third suspect.

Police narrated how the suspect led villagers to where Dr Tanui’s decomposing body was discovered, after which angry members of the public blocked Eldoret/Kapsabet/Kisumu High on Saturday demanding justice.

According to Nandi Central Sub-County Police Commander Doris Chemos, preliminary investigations suggest that Dr Tanui may have been killed two days before his body was discovered. “Homicide officers have been invited from Nairobi to take over the investigation after locals demanded justice,” said Mr Chemos.

Nandi County Deputy Commissioner Obedi Mose assured the community that justice would be done and more suspects would be arrested and charged to court.

He also revealed that one of the suspects had told police that Dr Tanui did not die from alcohol as had been claimed earlier.

The suspect alleged that he drowned in Kingwar River while returning home on foot from a social gathering at Chepterit trading centre.

Shortly after Dr Tanui’s burial, his wife and three children moved out of their matrimonial home after falling out with her in-laws.

She claimed that she was thrown out by her husband’s family who also denied her access to their car soon after his burial.

The case continues as authorities work towards bringing all those responsible for Dr Tanui’s death to justice.
