The Giraffe Center was founded by the late couple Betty and Jock Leslie Melville in 1979. Betty discovered the sad plight of the Rothschild giraffe which was near extinction numbering only 120 at the time on an 18,000-acre ranch in Western Kenya that was scheduled for sub-division and settlement. The Couple raised funds, under the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife Kenya (A.F.E.W. Kenya), non-profit making organization, and 4 herds of the Rothschild giraffes were moved to 4 parks.
The Centre is dedicated to the preservation of the endangered Rothschild giraffe. Visitors can experience the rare pleasure of getting close and a personal sticky encounter with the tongues of a Rothschild’s giraffe while hand-feeding the giraffes.
Nature Walk
The Center also has a nature walk trail that stretches about 1.5 kilometers meandering through thick bushes and forests. While on the trail you might be lucky and encounter a variety of animals that make this forest their home including the giraffes, warthogs, hyenas and at times leopards.
