Women Embrace E-Bikes As A Sustainable Solution To Combat Climate Change

Two female boda boda riders in Kenya, Lucy Achieng and Doris Gakii, have switched to using electric bikes (e-bikes) for their delivery business to reduce emissions. The women believe that e-bikes are cheaper to maintain than fuel bikes and easier to operate. They also produce no noise pollution, enabling access to areas such as hospitals where noise is prohibited. Women’s inclusion in climate change action is vital since they are the most affected by its effects and often lack adequate resources. However, the two riders suggest that modifications are needed for e-bikes, including increasing battery capacity or accommodating multiple batteries and setting up charging stations countrywide.
