The National Treasury has proposed a budget allocation of Sh8 billion each to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and the Office of the Auditor General in the 2023/2024 financial year.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) will receive Sh3.9 billion, while the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) is set for a Sh3.6 billion allocation.

According to Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung’u, this move will enhance good governance and scale up the fight against graft in Kenya. “This government is committed to scaling up the implementation of the provisions of the 2010 constitution, strengthening the rule of law, increasing access to justice, and ensuring respect for human rights,” said CS Ndung’u.

In addition to these allocations, President William Ruto will spend an additional Sh300 billion compared to a similar period last year as he seeks to fund his manifestos.

The Kenya Kwanza administration budget has increased from Sh3.3 trillion in the 2022–23 FY to Sh3.6 trillion.

The National Treasury expects to raise Sh2.89 billion, out of which Sh2.48 billion will go into recurrent expenditures and Sh689.1 billion in development projects.

However, it faces a deficit hole of Sh663.5 billion that it seeks to raise by local and international borrowing.

The proposals presented by Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung’u have been submitted to Parliament for approval.

It remains unclear how these funds will be utilized by each department; however, with increased funding comes increased responsibility and accountability for these institutions tasked with fighting corruption in Kenya.
